With four different instructors simultaneously demonstrating a single program, each providing different modifications of the same poses, Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss delivers a thorough, well-organized practice that can be undertaken by users at all levels of experience, fitness, and flexibility. After a gradual warm-up sequence, Suzanne Deason and her fellow instructors lead you through a series of standing asanas, back and forward bends, twists, and so on, with the proper technique and function of each pose explained clearly and concisely. The result is a workout that's challenging but not overwhelming and that should stand up to plenty of repeated use. All in all, another good offering from Living Arts.

| 3. | ![]() | Prevention Fitness: Shortcuts to Big Weight Loss I have almost all of Preventions dvds. They are great because you can do only a little workout, or combine all segments for one long workout. Plus, they aren't intimidating or too challenging that you won't do them. All the instructors are fantastic and Chris is excellent in this as she usually is. In this particular workout, there are three different 11 minute segments. There's cardio sculpt, pilates and kickbox. I love the pilates section where you also use dumbbells to increase the effect (like a bicep curl along with a bicycle). If you like kickboxing, you are in luck - it's fast and fun and totally fat burning. At the end of the dvd there is a 6 minute tutorial. All you need are some dumbbells and plenty of energy. I've done this twice already and really enjoy it. Chris is bubbly as usuall and I love how you can pick and choose what exercises you do and how long your routine is going to be. This is a fantastic workout that I highly recommend.

| 4. | ![]() | Pilates Conditioning for Weight Loss I bought this DVD after having used the Living Arts Basic Matwork DVD for about 2 months. I purchased Brooke Siler's The Pilates Body book at the same time. The instructor's (Deason) approach to Pilates instruction seems to grow from a Yoga practice. The DVD starts with a 10 minute body-awareness session centering on breathing and movement during the breath. This is good for the overweight and provides a good foundation for the principles the workout is based on. The workout sessions offer 4 workout POV's (beginner, moderate, or full and combined). I can keep up with the moderate but can't keep up with Deason, the full practice model, for the entire session. This is where the fourth view is useful, a longer shot where you can view all postures simultaneously (with some inserted close-ups that keep the camera position from becoming stale). PFW also does more reps of each exercise so this session is longer to perform. Also, some postures have a 'Pilates tutor' section available. In movements where this feature is available a small figure doing 'The Teaser' appears in the lower right corner of the screen. The graphic signals the availability of a section on the disk that explains the posture for those who are new to Pilates. If you are a beginner to Pilates, please view these sections. PLEASE, don't follow the Full practice forms until you've been doing Piltes for a couple of weeks. You could hurt yourself. Better to start slow and stay with it than push to hard and and be sidelined by injury or burn out. By now, you're thinking, 'So why did this guy only give the DVD a 3?' The style of PFW is more Yoga-centric, which is good for some but doesn't really hold my interest. I prefer the more standard instructor-led style of Ana Caban. Also, and I learned this after completing the Siler book, some of the exercices used in the DVD are modifications of actual Pilates mat workout practice. So if authenticity of technique is what you crave, this really isn't the right DVD. Not to say that this isn't a good workout. It is. If you do the exercises as instructed you will feel it the next day. This is as it should be. So much of the Pilates work is isometric, you can always make the workout harder as you get stronger. I would have given this work a 3.5 if I could.

| 5. | ![]() | Yoga For Weight Loss - Beginner & Beyond (2007) Having done yoga both with videos and in a class, I found this video to be a step above most other yoga videos. It is arranged in three sections, each having multiple workouts. The first section is designed for beginners, with one section teaching a basic set of poses, and two sections with flow-style practices of varying length. That is, the poses flow from one to the next for continuous, slow movement. The pacing is great - slow enough to allow good form in each pose, but fast enough to allow you to move along with the breath, as you breath in and out. However, it is clearly not "remedial," and includes poses requiring some flexibility, balance, and strength (e.g., downward-facing dog with one leg raised, as well as some balancing poses). If someone lacks flexibility or strength, I'd definitely recommend starting instead with "Essential Yoga for Inflexible People," which a friend tells me is perfect for beginners. The second section (the one I use the most) is a little more challenging and also has several different flow-style practices that vary in focus (arms, legs, total body) and length. It's surprising how much your heart gets beating and you really feel your muscles working. They are the ideal every-day workout. The third section is an interesting twist - yoga along with light weights or a resistance band to get even more strength training work. Again, there are several different practices that vary in focus and length. Very clever and fun. The instructions on how to work in each pose are extremely well done. Usually, the biggest downside to learning yoga from a video rather than a well-conducted class is that you can't get individualized instruction, and so you can learn the poses incorrectly and not get the full benefit of the practice. However, the instruction is so well-done that I found this video to instead help me refine and improve my use of the various poses. Finally, the filming is simply beautiful, with a gorgeous ocean landscape. This is quickly becoming my favorite yoga video!

I practiced yoga in my 20s and was unsure how I would do nearly 30 years later. I became inspired after hearing Mariel Hemingway speak at a women's luncheon. I bought both of her books and got her yoga series "Yoga Now" with Rodney Yee. I love that series but then found this DVD. I am a "Dummies" fan so was thrilled to come upon this workout. I alternate between the 3 DVDs (Yoga Now has two DVDs - one shorter and the other nearly an hour long) - depending on how much time I have. I must admit that I think this is my favorite of all the yoga DVDs I've viewed. One of the main things I like about this DVD is it gives you a good warm up and cool down. So many of the other DVDs I've experienced that say they're for beginners just plain aren't. They jump right in with fairly complex poses with virtually no explanation. Chris may appear a bit robotic to some but I think she is a good instructor. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone interested in a great aerobic yoga workout!
